Your Gluten-Free Roundtrip

 
Day One – Truffle Day / Location: North-West Istria
 
Visit north-west  Istria, its medieval towns and villages,  Motovun and Oprtalj region, overlooking the river Mirna valley – the famous truffle region. Possibility to arrange truffle hunting demonstration with (truffle) hunter and his (or hers) trained dogs.
Lunch in Motovun – gluten-free truffle specialties.
A short ride to the next hilltop and you reach Grožnjan, art gallery and music town, famous after cultural heritage and natural beauty.
After stroll through Grožnjan, enjoy a late afternoon snack and a glass of wine on the little town`s square under the centuries old chestnut tree.
 
 
 
Day Two – City  Tour and Cooking Class  / Location: Poreč
 
Take a stroll through old town of Poreč , including Basilica Eufrasiana (UNESCO).
Early afternoon at leisure.
Late afternoon hands-on  cooking class in the typical Istrian family farmer`s tavern in the heart of Istra, nearby the village of Žminj.
Theme: Istrian homemade  gluten-free pasta, different styles.
Dinner at the same farmer`s place.
 
 
 
Day Three – Wine & Meat  / Location: Wine Region West istria
Individual mosaics workshop* in Poreč  or visit the historical and cultural society Giostra to look at the historical costumes.
Lunch at the restaurant by the sea in Poreč  with meat menu,  “šugo od boškarina”, typical Istrian dish, ox meat prepared in the traditional style.
Visit the award winning Winery (2013.  Wine Vinistra Fair – the most important wine fair in this region)
Wine Tasting with a snack (canapés)
* Poreč is called “citta dei mosaici” because of the beautifully preserved Byzantium early Christian mosaics
 
 
Day Four –  Oyster & Fish Day / Location: Lim Channel –West Coast
 
Visit Lim Channel, oyster and sea bass farming site by boat. The farmer will take you through and explain all about the process of farming.
Fish lunch at the restaurant at the very peak of the channel.
Take a guided tour through the streets of Rovinj, the most  picturesque and romantic town on Croatian Adriatic coast.
Dinner and overnight in Rovinj
 
Day Five – National Park Brijuni + pilchard day / Location: National Park Brijuni + Fažana
Visit the National Park Brijuni with the local expert guide.
Late lunch in Fažana, the little fisher village nearby and try their specialties pilchard prepared in a gluten-free style.
 
Day Six – Roman Pula , olive oil and Istrian ham (Prosciutto) day / Location: South Istria and Pula
Visit Pula with Roman and Austrian Architecture, the beautiful Austrian market place building, Forum Romanum…
Visit Olive gardens and prosciutto manufacturer in the area of Pula.
Olive Oil and prosciutto tasting with canapés and light snacks.
 
NOTE:
This is an itinerary example, a suggestion of Istrian gourmet roundtrip.
However, your personal program is flexible and it is customised according to your personal preferencies.

  • Opatija (Austro-Hungarian former summer resort)  and Rijeka (3rd largest town in Croatia, big port town), Kvarner Bay  (islands Krk and Cres) – 1 hrs 15 min one way*
  • Plitvice lakes National Park (UNESCO world heritage)  -  4 hrs one way*
  • Zagreb (wonderful mixture of Croatia and  Middle Europe) – 3 hrs one way*

Slovenia:

  • Postojna cave, Piran, Koper – 1 hrs 30 min one way*

Italy:

  • Trieste shopping spree   -  1 hrs 20 min one way*
  • Venice by speed boat -  2 hrs one way*
